Revamp your investment strategy
Description
In formulating your personal investment strategy, it's crucial to adopt a comprehensive, life-encompassing perspective, rather than the narrow profit-oriented viewpoint often promoted by Wall Street. From this comprehensive standpoint, there are four primary strategies that should be employed to manage both your professional life and your investment portfolio:
1. The terms 'safe' and 'successful' should always be intertwined when contemplating your investment decisions. Pledge to build a portfolio that prioritizes risk mitigation above all else, and vow never to gamble your money away, regardless of how enticing the potential reward may seem. 2. It's essential to understand your financial sufficiency. Resist the urge to constantly outperform the stock market annually, or to accumulate more wealth than your wealthiest acquaintance. Once you comprehend this fundamental principle, you liberate yourself to explore beyond the End Game and discover the other enriching experiences life has to offer. – Gary Marks

01Approach #1 – mastering emotional intelligence.
How would you describe the ultimate objective of your personal investment activities? This is a question that many investors don't often contemplate. You might have naturally assumed that the aim is to continually grow your personal wealth until you've amassed everything you and your family could ever desire. However, this perspective on the end game presents several issues: Do you wish to dedicate every waking moment to managing your investments, or would you prefer more leisure time? For most individuals, the ability to create free time to spend with family is invaluable, leading them to delegate some tasks to others to gain more free time. If you don't have a clear finish line where you have sufficient funds, how can you determine when you've triumphed in the game? Maybe you envision investing as a lifelong endeavor to leave a substantial inheritance for your children.
Do you perceive successful investing as more of a skill or an art form? A skilled investor comprehends the fundamentals of investing and can conduct thorough due diligence to distinguish between hype and reality. Once you've mastered the skill and learned how to safely amass wealth, your artistic side can emerge and shape your actions. Striking a balance between the art and skill of investing is essential to feeling satisfied with your efforts. Can you imagine a scenario where managing your investments becomes more of a hindrance to the lifestyle you aspire to, rather than a benefit? This might be difficult to envision when you're just starting out. However, there are indeed individuals who devote all their time to earning more money to purchase new luxuries (airplanes, yachts, magnificent homes) that they never have time to actually use and enjoy. Instead, these wealthy individuals employ staff to maintain and manage their assets while they focus on acquiring even better luxuries.
02Approach #2 – distinguishing market facts from market fiction.
A vast industry is dedicated to offering investment advice, encompassing financial newsletters, market timing strategists, investment advisors, financial TV shows, hedge fund managers, and more. They promote a plethora of systems based on market momentum, technical buy-sell signals, logic-driven systems, and analysis of price-earnings or valuation-based financial models, among others.
One might logically assume that within this extensive information industry, there must be someone who truly understands what they're doing. However, the reality is that no one truly comprehends why markets move, nor can anyone predict future market movements with any degree of certainty.
When someone proposes to share insider tips on beating the market through their newsletter or seminar, it's crucial to ask yourself several questions. If the system is based on back-tests, are you genuinely willing to invest good money to test its future effectiveness? If the system truly works, why is the developer selling it instead of making billions by applying it themselves? If the system works, its effectiveness would be diluted the more people know about it, so why share it? If the developer is sharing it out of kindness or a desire to prevent you from being scammed, why are they asking for money? If someone professes 'love' for an investment strategy, a specific stock, a mutual fund, or an asset class like gold or real estate, is that love based on current profitability or something else?
03Approach #3 – prioritize hedging at all times.
Embarking on an investment journey requires careful preparation and a strategic approach. Before diving into the world of investments, it's essential to ensure that all debts, especially those from credit cards, are cleared. Investing money that isn't truly yours can lead to financial instability.
Additionally, setting aside a cash reserve is crucial. This reserve should be enough to cover at least three months of living expenses, along with extra funds for unforeseen emergencies. Owning the house you live in also provides a significant psychological advantage, offering a sense of security that can be invaluable during uncertain times.
Once these foundational steps are in place, it's time to evaluate the cash available for investment. As you progress in your investment endeavors, it's important to focus on percentages rather than absolute dollar amounts. For instance, it's less intimidating to acknowledge a 1% loss on a $2 million portfolio than to face a $20,000 loss head-on. Investment success is largely about understanding and managing percentages.
Moreover, it's advisable to steer clear of brokerage firms, money managers, or financial planners if possible. A simple, well-thought-out investment strategy should not require expensive advice. Given the dynamic nature of markets, long-term plans can often become obsolete.
Dollar-cost averaging is a strategy worth employing. By investing a fixed percentage of your assets consistently over time, you can rebalance your portfolio biannually to its original allocation. This approach allows you to buy more of the sectors that have declined in value and benefit from the sectors that have appreciated. Combining dollar-cost averaging with a diversified portfolio of exchange-traded funds enables participation in major market upswings with minimized risk. Over a decade or more, this method significantly increases the odds of investment success.
04Approach #4 – pursue the ultimate goal.
In the realm of financial planning, it's not uncommon for professionals to charge significant fees, sometimes over $5,000, for crafting a detailed five-year financial strategy.
However, the inherent unpredictability of life and the swift changes in our personal circumstances and the global environment often make such plans obsolete shortly after their creation. This reality underscores the importance of understanding that personal finances typically oscillate through three distinct phases. Recognizing and adapting to these phases is crucial for effective financial management.
While the aspiration might be to remain in a growth phase indefinitely, the unpredictability of life makes it impossible to predict our financial status a year down the line. The key to sustaining a stable financial phase lies in the establishment of a family budget that is both understood and adhered to by all members.
A well-constructed budget should be a collective effort, especially if you are married, ensuring that all parties are involved in the financial decision-making process. It must take into account all taxes, allocate funds for family leisure activities, and allow for a lifestyle that minimizes stress and promotes a balanced life. This balance is vital; obsessing over financial accumulation or dedicating every waking hour to career advancement and investment endeavors can lead to a disconnection from the essence of life, adversely affecting both family relationships and personal well-being.
