Description

You can't comprehend the world just by reading extensively about it. To understand better, be intentional about what you pay attention to. What if you could become an endless learner, curious and able to see, grasp, and expect things others miss? And what if you could actually learn to predict the future after connecting everything? You can, and I aim to teach you how. I call my method Non-Obvious Thinking, and it can transform your life.

I don't simply read widely to comprehend the world better. I intentionally focus on what I pay attention to. If I stay curious and keep learning, I can see, understand, and expect things others miss. After connecting the pieces, I could even learn to predict the future. With Non-Obvious Thinking, I aim to teach this transformative skill.

The advantages of unconventional thinking

Non-obvious thinkers, characterized by their growth mindset, excel in perceiving nuances and opportunities that others often overlook. This unique approach to thinking and learning is not just about accumulating information but about being selective and intentional with what one focuses on. Such individuals stand out for their ability to not accept the status quo, constantly seeking to understand and innovate beyond conventional boundaries.

The essence of non-obvious thinking lies in five key mindsets. Firstly, these thinkers are exceptionally observant, paying attention to details that escape most people. This involves a deliberate effort to disconnect from digital distractions and engage deeply with the immediate environment.

Secondly, their insatiable curiosity drives them to ask questions about everything, fostering a continuous learning process that goes beyond passive content consumption.

Trend #1 - enhanced personas

In a hyperconnected world, amplified identities reflect our growing pains. We should approach them with empathy, wisdom, and patience, guiding young people to project their inner light outward through social media, aiming for human understanding and mutual support.

Online and offline, people meticulously craft their public personas. The digital age sees many chasing the perfect selfie at photogenic spots, not for the experience but for social media validation. This pressure to curate a public life may contribute to increased depression and suicide rates. Yet, there's a brighter view where social media fosters authenticity and confidence, with curated content boosting self-esteem and control over personal narratives.

Trend #2 - gender neutrality

The landscape of gender perceptions is rapidly evolving, with traditional gender roles and divisions becoming increasingly viewed as obsolete. As society moves towards recognizing a spectrum of gender identities, it is imperative for businesses to align with this progressive shift to maintain relevance and appeal to a broader audience.

In response to this ungendering trend, it is essential for companies to critically assess the necessity of gender distinctions within their products and services. Eliminating gender-specific language and imagery in packaging and marketing materials can foster inclusivity and resonate with a more diverse consumer base. By adopting a gender-neutral approach, businesses can avoid alienating potential customers who do not identify with traditional gender categories.

Trend #3 - just-in-time expertise

The digital age has transformed the landscape of education, making knowledge and expertise accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This shift is partly due to the prohibitive costs of traditional college education, which have led to a burgeoning student debt crisis and prompted questions about the value of a degree. Online platforms now offer specialized courses taught by experts, providing targeted knowledge without the financial burden of university tuition.

This convenience and accessibility have democratized learning, allowing individuals to pursue education on their terms. However, this ease of access raises concerns about the depth of understanding and intellectual engagement. The prevalence of bite-sized, easily digestible content may encourage superficial learning and diminish the capacity for complex thought. To navigate this new landscape effectively, it is crucial to balance the convenience of online learning with the commitment to deep, sustained study.

Trend #4 - retro-nostalgia

Nostalgia, a longing for the past, is increasingly influential in today's fast-paced, technology-driven world. People find solace in the familiar, seeking out experiences and products that remind them of simpler times. This trend, known as revivalism, is evident in the continued popularity of print books over digital ones, the resurgence of film photography, and the demand for artisanal goods. It's a response to information overload and a desire to connect with a past perceived as more authentic and less complicated.

Trend #5 - human interaction

In the face of increasing automation, consumers often prefer and are willing to pay more for services that offer human interaction. A McKinsey report suggests that while 45 percent of jobs could be automated, there's a growing demand for human-centric experiences. Brands like Shinola thrive by emphasizing their human stories, such as their contribution to Detroit's revival. Rohit Bhargava notes that authenticity and imperfection in human experiences are highly valued, as seen in the popularity of YouTube channels where people share personal struggles.

Trend #6 - attention capital

In today's world, attention is a highly sought-after commodity, with individuals and organizations vying to capture it to wield influence in various spheres. This competition has escalated into a fierce battle, with many resorting to creating shocking or entertaining spectacles to grab our focus. According to Rohit Bhargava, those who succeed in attracting our attention often do so by appealing to our senses through shock or awe, leading to a general increase in skepticism and selectivity among the public.

Trend #7 - purpose-driven profits

In today's market, profit is necessary, but there's a growing demand for companies to prioritize purpose over profits. Customers increasingly choose to buy from and work for brands that contribute positively to the world. This shift towards purposeful profit is driven by greater transparency and the power of social media, enabling consumers to use their purchases as expressions of their values. Sustainable investing is on the rise, and consumers are paying more attention to the ethical practices of companies, from ingredient transparency to environmental impact.

Trend #8 - data abundance

As the volume of data generated daily continues to grow, the question of ownership becomes increasingly significant. Many companies collect vast amounts of data on customers, suppliers, and markets, traditionally owning the data they gather and monetizing it by selling access. However, a shift is underway, with consumers beginning to reclaim ownership of their personal data, sharing it selectively for tangible benefits like customized products or services.

Amidst this data deluge, deriving meaningful insights poses a challenge. For instance, wearable fitness trackers, popular among consumers, generate health-related data that both patients and healthcare providers find difficult to interpret for actionable health outcomes.

Trend #9 - privacy technology

As predictive technologies evolve, they bring both convenience and safety, but also raise concerns about privacy and autonomy. Consumers have embraced features like flight delay notifications and purchase verification calls for their efficiency, yet the potential for data breaches and misuse looms large.

In healthcare, predictive tech like activity trackers and emotional chatbots offer benefits, but may also challenge personal privacy. The introduction of "food shaming" vending machines that restrict snack choices based on health data further complicates the debate, highlighting tensions between technological benefits and personal freedom.

Trend #10 - flexible commerce

Consumer behavior is rapidly evolving, leading to a transformation in how goods and services are bought and sold. Traditional industry boundaries are becoming blurred, prompting businesses to innovate their models, sales channels, and distribution methods.

For instance, a Spanish movie theater circumvented a tax hike by selling carrots with "free" movie tickets, while another charged patrons based on their laughter, tracked by facial recognition technology. Casper revolutionized mattress sales by offering compressed, easily shipped foam mattresses online, a concept now extended to various products.
