Born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire on 30 November 1874, Sir Winston Churchill stands as one of the defining figures of the twentieth century. A British statesman, military officer, and writer of mixed English and American parentage, he served as Prime Minister during the Second World War (1940–45) and again from 1951 to 1955. Over six decades he represented five parliamentary constituencies, moving between the Conservative and Liberal parties.
He also gained early fame as a war correspondent and author before ascending through a succession of major cabinet offices.
