About the author

Peter Handke, born in Griffen, Austria, in 1942, is one of the most influential and original German-language writers of the second half of the 20th century — a distinction confirmed by the 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded for work that explores, with linguistic ingenuity, the periphery and specificity of human experience. He emerged in the late 1960s as an avant-garde provocateur with plays such as Offending the Audience and Kaspar, and went on to write deadpan, ultra-objective novels probing extreme states of mind. His screenwriting collaborations with Wim Wenders include Wings of Desire.
