About the author

Lee Strasberg (1901-1982) was an Austrian-American theatre director, actor, and acting teacher who revolutionized American theatrical pedagogy. Co-founder of the Group Theatre in 1931, Strasberg became the artistic director of the Actors Studio in 1951, where he developed his interpretation of Stanislavski's Method. His academic contributions include extensive writings on acting theory and practice, with "A Dream of Passion" representing his most comprehensive theoretical statement. Strasberg's influence extended beyond theatre to film, training generations of actors including Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe. His work fundamentally transformed American performance culture through systematic exploration of psychological realism and emotional authenticity in acting.

Strasberg's position as both practitioner and theorist gives him unique authority in addressing the fundamental challenges of performance. His decades of experience at the Actors Studio provided him with extensive empirical evidence for his theoretical claims, allowing him to ground abstract concepts in concrete pedagogical practice. This dual perspective enables him to speak with credibility to both academic theorists and working professionals, bridging the often problematic gap between theory and practice in artistic education.
