John Berger
About the author
John Berger (1926–2017) was an English art critic, novelist, painter, and poet whose work reshaped how audiences think about visual culture. His 1972 novel G. won the Booker Prize, while his essay Ways of Seeing — companion to the BBC television series of the same name — became one of the most enduringly influential texts in art criticism.
Born in London, he spent more than fifty years living in France. Across forms and disciplines, Berger remained a restlessly engaged thinker whose ideas on image, power, and perception continue to be widely read.
