Abhijit Banerjee, born in Mumbai in 1961, is an Indian American economist and Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at MIT. He co-founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), a global research center that uses scientific evidence to shape poverty alleviation strategies. In 2019, he shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Esther Duflo — his wife — and Michael Kremer, recognized for their experimental approach to fighting global poverty.
A fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he ranks among the world's most productive development economists.
